These are the cheapest hours today

New rise in the price of electricity this Kings Day. The cheapest hour of the day in the regulated rate will be double that of the previous day despite being a public holiday and the most expensive will amount to more than 35 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). Even so, the price gives a break from 10 to 17 hours, according to Red Eléctrica de España.

Peak and valley hours

  • The cheapest: from 4 to 5 at € 0.23525 / kWh
  • The most expensive: from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at € 0.35209 / kWh

The average price of electricity in the wholesale market, which directly influences the regulated tariff, will skyrocket today by 18.2% compared to yesterday, chaining its fifth consecutive day of increases, and will once again exceed the level of 210 euros per megawatt hour (MWh).

Specifically, the wholesaler will register for this Thursday an average price of € 212.98 / MWh, with an increase of almost 33 euros compared to € 180.2 / MWh this Wednesday, according to data published by the Iberian Market Operator of Energy (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.

By time slots, the minimum price of electricity for this January 6, Three Kings Day, will be between 05.00 and 06.00 hours, with € 170.1 / MWh, while the maximum, € 278.36 / MWh , will be registered between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

The € 212.98 / MWh that will mark on average this Thursday the electricity wholesale market thus represents the highest price level since last December 25 and the level of € 200 / MWh is once again exceeded for the first time so far year.

The reasons for the upload

The increase in prices in recent months in the electricity market is mainly explained by the high gas prices in the markets and the carbon dioxide emission rights (CO2), at all-time highs this year.

Thus, compared to the same day just a year ago, the rise experienced this Thursday will be 139.5%, since on January 6, 2021 the price of electricity stood at 88.93 euros / MWh .
