The omicron variant continues to advance in Catalonia: more than 15,000 infections

Contagions continue to explode in Catalonia , with the indicators on the rise but a situation incomparable to that of last Christmas Eve. The omicron variant, more transmissible than previous mutations, causes less serious effects, but multiplies the positive ones: in the last hours more than 15,000 infections have been added, and the epidemic curve of this sixth wave continues to rise. The risk of regrowth (EPG), after loosening the last two days, has moved rapidly upwards again, with 120 more hit points, and he's already at 1,264. Hospitals, for their part, continue to add patients and more critical units occupied by patients with covid.

According to the incidence data updated this Friday by Salut, today there are 1,359 people admitted, 15 more than those reported yesterday, of which 366, twenty more than yesterday, they are serious in the ICU. A year ago, on December 23, 2020, there were 337 admitted with covid in the ucis of Catalan hospitals, a figure that increased in January to a peak in that wave of 731, on February 2. The big difference with the wave of last Christmas is in mortality, now much less, and in a context of many more infections (triple than then ).

Mortality rises

The deaths from covid in the community since the beginning of the epidemic amount to 24,434, a total of 21 of them reported in the last 24 hours, while in the last seven days there have been 130 deaths from the disease, an average of about 18 per day, mortality that did not occur since mid-August, but much lower than the 297 deaths that occurred the same week last year, when vaccination had not yet started.

Returning to the data, the speed of spread of the virus (Rt) in Catalonia is 1.33 today, six hundredths less than yesterday, in the fourth day of descent, which means that every 100 infected infect an average of 133 people. It is the only indicator that has remained fairly stable in recent weeks, or even with downward trends, as now.
