Pretty Smart Season 2 Release Date, Cast And Plot – What We Know So Far
“Pretty Smart,” which premiered on October 8 with 10 half-hour episodes, is Netflix’s latest broadcast network-style sitcom. It’s filmed on a traditional living room sitcom set and its simple jokes are sweetened by a laugh track.
The series is about a young woman named Chelsea (Emily Osment), a sophisticated, Harvard-educated aspiring novelist, who moves in with her sister Claire (Olivia Macklin) in Los Angeles after her boyfriend dumps her. Chelsea and Claire are total opposites. Claire is a bubbly, carefree waitress who is as gorgeous as she is unintellectual. Their relationship has been strained because Chelsea kind of looks down on Claire for being less intelligent than her. Of course, as they live together, they get closer again. And Chelsea gets closer to Claire’s roommates, too -– Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen), a social media influencer, as well as Solana (Cinthya Carmona), a former lawyer-turned-New Age healer, and especially, Grant (Gregg Sulkin), Claire’s hunky ex-boyfriend and Chelsea’s co-worker at a gym called Build.
The series is a light, fun comedy starring a pair of former Disney Channel stars (Osment and Sulkin). Netflix hasn’t made any announcements about the future of “Pretty Smart” so far, but here’s what we know — or are willing to speculate about — regarding a potential Season 2.
What's Pretty Smart Season 2's release date?
Since “Pretty Smart” hasn’t been renewed for Season 2 yet, there’s obviously no release date set yet. With that said, it’s totally reasonable to assume the next season will come out around the same time next year as the first season.
Sometimes Netflix splits seasons into “parts” where halves of a season come out a few months apart. That doesn’t seem to be the case with “Pretty Smart,” which on Netflix is marked as “Season 1,” not “Part 1.” So based on that logic, it seems more likely that “Pretty Smart” Season 2 would come out a year from now — that’s October 2022, at this time of writing — than six months from now.
What's Pretty Smart Season 2's cast?
Presumably, the same cast from Season 1 would return for Season 2. That includes Emily Osment, Gregg Sulkin, Olivia Macklin, Michael Hsu Rosen, and Cinthya Carmona. And perhaps some of the recurring and guest cast would return as well, like Kevin Miles –- better known as Jake from State Farm -– as Dave, Claire’s ex-boyfriend, not to mention Geoff Ross as Howard, the manager at the restaurant where Claire works, and Ming-Na Wen as Jasmine, Jayden’s mother.
Some of the behind-the-scenes people are likely to return as well. The show’s creators and executive producers are Jack Dolgen and Doug Mand, who previously worked together on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” Other executive producers are “How I Met Your Mother” veteran and “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” showrunner Kourtney Kang, who helped develop the show and Pamela Fryman, who directed three episodes of “Pretty Smart,” including the pilot, as well as most episodes of “How I Met Your Mother.”
What's the plot of Pretty Smart Season 2?
“Pretty Smart” ended Season 1 on a cliffhanger, with Claire breaking up with Dave and coming home and kissing Grant one moment before Chelsea walked into the room to tell her sister she needed to talk to her about wanting to pursue a relationship with Grant, because they wanted to make sure before they started dating that their relationship would be okay with her. What will happen in this sisterly love triangle? This is probably the biggest subject that will have to be addressed when Season 2 picks up.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen in Season 2,” Emily Osment told Entertainment Tonight. “So I’m very excited to see.”
Gregg Sulkin said he didn’t know which sister he’d like Grant to be with in Season 2. “There’s a real lovely innocence between Grant and Claire, and on the flipside there’s a real sort of evolution and growth with Grant and Chelsea. Chelsea’s taught Grant so much … Both Olivia and Emily are so great to work with, and so however the writers take it, I’ll be happy with either.”
For the record, Michael Hsu Rosen and Cinthya Carmona are rooting for Grant and Chelsea to get together, they told Entertainment Tonight. That’s probably the direction things are headed, but there will surely be a little bit of family drama in Season 2 before we get there.
